Of old this was a green river valley with small villages set on the banks and an old cage monastery carved in the high rocky slopes. In 1981 Bakota village and the entire area was flooded; they built the dam to block the river and created a huge water storage reservoir.
Bakota with its houses and churches went underneath the water. The huge water reservoir is rimmed with beautiful and tranquil green hills. But not all the slopes are grown with grass and bushes. Some of them steep down to the water with sheer rock. Some rocky hills are over 400 feet high; back in 10th century Christian monks took fancy to these rocks and carved their first monastery there.
Till this day Christian pilgrims come to this area to pray and worship. You can visit the old caves of the monastery. There are three large caves and two floors. Formerly the two storey monastery was connected by wooden steps, which are gone now. One storey tops over the other one some 12-15 feet. There are 19 carved ancient graves in the monastery.
The beauty of the nature of Bakota is extraordinary. There are many activities available there. You can just walk the old paths and enjoy the beauty of the place; you can do some boating, fishing or swimming in the clean water of this river. The place makes you forget all about the business and stress of our modern world. The nature and its awesomeness helps you find peace and tranquility so rare and longed for the rush of the urban life. Surely your visit to Bakota would become one of the memorable adventures of your life.
