These are amazing places worth visiting and one of them is Khotyn Fortress.
The fortress is located on a high hill towering over the Dnestr river banks. Khotyn town is one of the most ancient settlements of Ukraine. The first fortress was erased there back in 10th century. Two centuries later its wooden walls and buildings were replaced with the stone ones. So, visiting Khotyn is the real chance to see and touch dateless antiquity.
The fortress is impressive. Its walls are 15-18 feet thick and in some places are over 120 feet high. The fortress consists of the ground and stone walls and five towers. The way in leads through large wooden gates and you have to cross wooden bridge propped with stone columns in order to enter the gates.
The outer fortress walls are adorned with red stone tracery. The inner court of the fortress is raised some 30 feet above the ground level. The court is divided into two parts. The first part was used for solder housing. You can see the small houses where solders of old would rest and peep into the deep well of this court (over 200 feet deep). The second part was inhabited by the kings and priests of old times. It has a fine castle in it with deep basement used for storing food and ammunition. There was a time, when the fortress belonged to Turks and the basement was used for locating numerous wives of the noblemen.
This old fortress has known both pain and glory of the old battles of this world. It has offered shelter to many renowned heroes of the past, to kings and princes of the old times. Visiting this wonder of Ukraine can help you feel, see and touch its glorious and ancient history.
